Chui
A Highly Acclaimed Space Jazz-Rock Band
"There were about a hundred of us, and with their help, we reached horizons we didn’t even know existed." – a comment from a Chui concert attendee
Chui is a highly acclaimed space jazz-rock band that boldly takes jazz into entirely new galaxies. Inspired by the worlds of science fiction, they have created a unique musical blend anchored in jazz yet open to genre-bending explorations.
In their sonic universe, anything goes – from Canterbury prog rock, electronica (from techno to stoner punk), and hip-hop to jazzcore. All of this forms their remarkably dynamic and unpredictable soundscape.
The band was founded in 2012 by Toni Starešinić, one of the finest keyboardists and creatives on the Croatian music scene. He was joined by Vojkan Jocić (six-time best jazz saxophonist in Croatia), then drummer Ivan Levačić (Abop, Eleven) and bassist Konrad Lovrenčić (Elemental, Kries). Each of the four musicians is a master, a virtuoso of his instrument, and when that’s the case, the possibilities are limitless.
Chui has released seven studio albums under Dancing Bear Records. Their breakthrough came with the album Third Sun From the Stone, which was named the best Croatian album of 2015.
Their collaboration with the HRT Jazz Orchestra resulted in the album Chui ovu glazbu, earning them their first Porin awards. In 2022, they released the double EP Zagreb Berlin, named Album of the Year.
With their latest album Do zvijezda (To the Stars), they have literally soared among the stars – the track Svemir ima novi pozivni (The Universe Has a New Call Sign) became the anthem of the first Croatian satellite CroCube and is now orbiting in space. The album earned them the title of Jazz&Off Performer of the Year and five Porin nominations, including Album of the Year.
Chui can also boast an outstanding collaboration with the Croatian music diva Josipa Lisac.
