26. Kids Folkart – Croatia, Slovakia
Exploring living cultural heritage through the performances of children's folklore groups in Slovakia and Croatia.
The children's folklore group Kremienok, which has seen almost 700 Bratislava children aged 4 to 18 over the years, was established in 1989. The group operates at the United School of St. Vincent de Paul in Bratislava, and currently includes 100 children. Its main mission is to engage young generations and spark interest in folk customs, dances, and songs. Regular rehearsals provide the children with meaningful ways to spend their free time.
The group draws inspiration for its performances from various regions of northern, western, central, and eastern Slovakia. The group's work has earned them numerous successes and awards at domestic competitions, on stages across Slovakia, as well as in many European countries such as Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Greece, Croatia, Macedonia, Hungary, Poland, Austria, Serbia, Spain, and Italy. They have performed in numerous radio and television programs. The founder of the group, choreographer of most of the dances in the group’s repertoire, and artistic director since its inception is Mrs. Katarína Baginová. The group is led by Mr. Kamil Bagin.
The Cultural and Art Society Zvon of the parish community of Mala Subotica has been operating since 1996 with the aim of promoting and preserving the cultural heritage in the Mala Subotica parish and municipality. The main task of the Zvon Society is the preservation of cultural heritage, working on educating young generations, and discovering and presenting forgotten folk customs, songs, dances, and the entire folk wealth of Međimurje.
The society brings together members of tambura and folklore groups, craftsmen, majorettes, and a choir. They are particularly proud of their collection of folk costumes, which consists of outfits from ten different regions of Croatia: Međimurje, Zagorje, Bistra, Podravina, Moslavina, Baranja, Ražanac, Korčula, Split, Gradišće, and Bunjevci. KUD Zvon traditionally organizes an annual concert on White Sunday and has been hosting the Međimurska County Children’s Folklore Creativity Festival since 2003.
The older children's folklore group Zvončice has been active since 2023 under the guidance of choreographer Tim Hrvaćanin. The group has had prominent performances at the Međimurska County Children’s Folklore Creativity Festival, the Children’s Meetings in Žiškovec, the 10th Children’s Folklore Meeting Folklorašić in Varaždin, and at cultural events in Mala Subotica. The group performs choreographies of songs and dances from Croatian Zagorje and Međimurje.
