The SWR Symphony Orchestra, the principal ensemble of the German South-West Broadcasting (SWR), ranks among the most distinguished and recognized orchestras in Germany. Based in Stuttgart, it regularly welcomes the world’s most celebrated classical performers and bold innovators in contemporary music. The orchestra has established a reputation as a powerful advocate of new music and a daring interpreter of the classical canon, notably during its acclaimed and often provocative collaboration with conductor Teodor Currentzis.
Starting in 2025, French conductor François-Xavier Roth takes up the post of chief conductor. For this concert in Maribor, he will lead us through an elegant programme blending the Baroque and Classical periods. The evening opens with Lully’s suite from Le Bourgeois gentilhomme, a vibrant collection of dances written for Molière’s satirical comédie-ballet. In Mozart’s final piano concerto, we’ll hear Kristian Bezuidenhout, one of today’s most sought-after pianists and a leading authority on Mozart’s music. The concert will conclude with Haydn’s witty and imaginative Symphony No. 101, nicknamed “The Clock” due to the ticking rhythm in its second movement.
