My Granny, the Socialist Stiff
Comedy based on a play by Tone Partljič
This theatre performance is based on the comedy My Grandpa, the Socialist Stiff by Slovenian playwright Tone Partljič. The story is set during Slovenia’s independence and transition period, focusing on the Javornik family, where three generations live under one roof: the partisan grandmother Jožica, her socialist-era son Tine, and the young, carefree granddaughter Janja.
Grandmother Jožica Javornik is convinced that she is still being monitored by the former secret police (UDBA), even in the new democracy. Her paranoia creates constant tension in the household. Her son Tine, a man mindful of his public image during these sensitive times, struggles with her outbursts. Janja, her only ally, supports her grandmother's conspiracy theories. Meanwhile, Tine's sister Cica and his wife Julka cope in their own ways – Cica with disbelief, Julka with horoscopes and organic food. After Jožica breaks a neighbor's window with a slingshot, the arrival of inspector Darja brings a surprising turn as old resentments come to light.
