Austrian-Jewish artist Gisela Rottonara (1873–1943) was deported to the Theresienstadt ghetto (Czech: Terezín) on 10 July 1942, where she died in January 1943. During this six-month period, she created over 60 pencil drawings, which reveal glimpses of everyday life in Theresienstadt, mostly taken near Rottonara’s residence in the ghetto. Shortly before her death, the artist managed to hand over the drawings to a fellow prisoner who survived the Holocaust and whose family still keeps her drawings as a family treasure. At the exhibition Images from Theresienstadt. A Visual Diary of Gisela Rottonara (1873–1943) in Synagogue Maribor, Gisela Rottonara's drawings are being publicly exhibited in Slovenia for the first time.
The organisation of the guest exhibition of the Institute for Jewish History in Austria from St. Pölten in Slovenia was supported by the Municipality of Maribor and the Austrian Cultural Forum in Ljubljana.
