Gala Alica / The Cabinet
Gala Alica explores space as a palimpsest through architectural fragments, tracing identity and memory. Her exhibition at the Umetnostna galerija Maribor uses “anti-objects” to unsettle spatial norms and open new meanings.
Gala Alica’s artistic practice is grounded in a nearly archaeological observation of the built environment, exploring the boundaries between private and public space and their impact on identity, memory, and belonging. She is interested in the historical layers of space and in how architecture shapes bodily and social experience, positioning the viewer as both observer and participant.
The project in the UGM Cabinet examines the building’s multilayered history as a palimpsest of different uses. The artist appropriates architectural fragments and, using materials such as MDF and iron, transforms them into a dialogue between past and present.
Four “anti-objects” destabilize the space, establishing the exhibition as an open field of tension and relations.
