Adrian Younge
Adrian Younge is a musical genius, period! He is the modern Quincy Jones: a self-taught multi-instrumentalist, producer, composer, head of the renowned analog studio Linear Labs and the Jazz is Dead label in Los Angeles, Emmy award winner, and a revolutionary in blending retro soul and funk with hip-hop elements, all wrapped in a unique cinematic experience. Truly one of a kind!
His debut Black Dynamite, a contemporary masterpiece in the tradition of blaxploitation films, became an instant success and now enjoys cult status, with the Los Angeles Times praising it as “one of the best soundtracks of all time.” In 2011, Younge created the first part of his soul trilogy Something About April, a dark mix of psychedelic soul and cinematic instrumentals, which he will also present in Maribor.
Remarkably, Adrian Younge has recorded over 50 albums to date, including for one of the most revolutionary contemporary labels, Jazz Is Dead, which reimagines albums with legends like Roy Ayers, Lonnie Liston Smith, and Tony Allen, as well as Brazilian icons João Donato, Hyldon, Marcos Valle, and Azymuth. His music has also deeply influenced today’s hip-hop scene—samples from his records can be heard in tracks by Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar, Common, DJ Premier, and Alchemist; Younge has also produced albums for artists such as Snoop Dogg, Cee Lo, and Rakim.
At the Slovenian premiere, Adrian Younge will present a compact ensemble that transcends the boundaries of cosmic soul, hypnotic jazz, and rock psychedelia. His concerts are a unique experience, driven by raw drum breakbeats, fuzz-laden electric guitars, rare analog synthesizers, and the powerful soul vocals of the exceptional singer Loren Odin. His performance continues the legacy of legendary acts such as Monophonics, José James, and Ibrahim Electric, which have always provided a unique finale to Festival Lent.
