Majid Bekkas & Nguyên Lê & Hamid Drake: Gnawa World Blues

Three continents, three global music citizens – in one supergroup! Majid Bekkas, born in Morocco; Vietnamese guitar virtuoso Nguyên Lê, based in France; and one of the most sought-after drummers of our time, Hamid Drake, living in Chicago, combine their musicality and global experience into an exhilarating mix of desert blues, transcendental Gnawa music, Eastern European jazz, 1960s rock, and Eastern serenity.

The combination of these musicians is so inspiring that it inevitably brings to mind the global musical legacy of Joe Zawinul. Voice, oud and guembri (both Arabic lutes), electric guitar producing a wide spectrum of sparkling tones, and a drum kit balancing subtlety and unbridled energy – these are the instruments of three unique world musicians.

Majid Bekkas has revolutionized the musical tradition of the Gnawa minority in Morocco while collaborating with jazz giants such as Joachim Kühn, Archie Shepp, and Pharoah Sanders. Nguyên Lê is an outstanding guitarist and perhaps one of the more overlooked names in contemporary jazz, while Hamid Drake is one of the most respected drummers in jazz over at least the last 30 years (working with Don Cherry, Herbie Hancock, Ken Vandermark, Fred Anderson, David Murray, and others).

Even more impressive is the repertoire of this supergroup: it ranges from traditional Moroccan melodies to blues classics by John Lee Hooker (Boom Boom) and psychedelic rock by Jimi Hendrix (Purple Haze). An exciting, emotional, and powerful musical experience that will stay in your memory for a long time.
