Ibrica Jusić
A recognizable voice, a guitar, and beside him on stage his loyal canine companion – who doesn’t know Ibrica Jusić? As a guitarist and singer-songwriter, he made his mark as early as 1968 at the Zagreb Festival. He built upon the tradition of the French chanson with his own authentic authorial expression, distinguished by poetic depth and intellect, as well as by composing music to the texts of renowned poets. For decades, Jusić was a hallmark of the Dubrovnik Summer Festival, where he regularly appeared as the organizer of evening concerts on the steps and also performed solo guitar recitals in the Rector’s Palace.
He released his first album in 1975, when he gained wider recognition across the Yugoslav music scene with early hits such as Mačka, Dobro jutro, Margareta, Ponoć, and Jubi san vašu ćer. His musical settings of verses by Shakespeare, Brecht, Paljetak, Antić, Britvić, and others also became popular. A turning point in his career was the first symphonic album Ibrica (1981), orchestrated by his older brother Đelo Jusić. Đelo also wrote many of Ibrica’s anthology songs, such as Šalom Sarah, U svakom slučaju te volim, Na Stradunu, and others. His style combines French chanson, Italian canzone, and Bosnian sevdah. The project From Shakespeare to Sevdah best captures the breadth of his themes.
