A place of safety. A Journey into the Central Mediterranean (IT)
Theatre Performance
The performance emerges from extensive field research that began with interviews conducted by directors Enrico Baraldi and Nicola Borghesi, continued through a residency in Lampedusa, and evolved into a journey along the Mediterranean migration route. Along the way, the artists encountered crew members of Life Support, the rescue vessel operated by EMERGENCY, as well as activists from Sea-Watch—individuals who later became the central protagonists of the production, directed by Nicola Borghesi.
A Place of Safety is, on one level, a story about an encounter between a theatre collective and people who have chosen to dedicate part of their lives to saving others at sea. Yet it is also, and perhaps above all, a quiet but powerful call to attention—illuminating one of the greatest collective blind spots of our continent: the reality unfolding in the Central Mediterranean.
At its core, the performance offers an intimate reflection on Europe itself—what it strives to be, what it is not, and what it still has the potential to become.
