Pas Moi
Pas Moi is a newly staged performative lecture by Diana Anselmo, representing the final chapter of her documentary and experiential research. The performance unravels networks of power and domination embedded in dominant historical narratives and continues the path begun with her previous work Je Vous Aime. While the earlier performance explored historical gestures and their impact on learning and education, Pas Moi delves into the perspective of Deaf communities and sign language, investigating the origins of the first instruments for recording, transmitting, and reproducing sound.
The performance reveals that iconic devices shaping film and music industries were often designed with an audiocentric and phonocentric purpose – as tools intended to “cure” deafness. Deafness has often been treated as a deficiency to be eradicated rather than recognized as an identity and culture with its own language and community. Pas Moi imagines how approaching difference not as a deficit can open new horizons and possibilities.
