Kralj Lear

Some analyses suggest that Lear’s madness, as established by Shakespeare, is not only the trigger of the dramatic action but also a mirror of the historical moment in which society of that time found itself. A contemporary reading of King Lear once again reflects today’s social reality—again on the edge of major political changes and divisions.

The aging King Lear, after banishing his youngest daughter Cordelia, decides to divide his kingdom between his daughters Goneril and Regan. He plans to live alternately with each of them, but they—already weary and irritated by his age and temper—begin to set ultimatums that strip him of his authority and power. King Lear is a play about violence, a radical analysis of social and interpersonal relations that emerge in the vacuum of a transition of power. It is Gramsci’s “time of monsters,” when the old world has not yet died, while the new one struggles to be born. A world in which the old gods refuse to leave peacefully and of their own accord, instead sowing madness and chaos.
