If a long-term relationship between two people could be cut open and observed as a kind of substance, concentric rings would likely appear before us—similar to those seen when a tree is cut down—revealing layers that have accumulated over the years, one on top of or next to another. These would be years and years and years of emotions, events, hopes, expectations, plans, surprises, lightness, heaviness, pressures, changes, stillness, rises, falls, arguments, and reconciliations.

In the play Why Did We Break Up, a husband and wife take us through their timeline—each from their own perspective guiding us through key and incidental moments from the history of their shared life, in order to understand what happened to them. With the staging of the latest text by Katarina Morano and Žiga Divjak, the creators delicately and precisely unfold and explore the most intimate map of a contemporary couple’s relationship.
