The performance Article 55 takes us back to the 1980s and the beginning of the 1990s. It reconstructs a period when the socialist system was coming to an end, nationalist tendencies were rising in the region, and new social movements and feminism were also strongly shaping society. As a socialist republic, Slovenia had already enshrined the right to decide on childbirth in its constitution in 1974. However, during the process of independence, this right was once again called into question. During the drafting of the new constitution, the article concerning women’s reproductive rights sparked the most controversy. Some proposed that it be simply omitted. Women’s and feminist groups strongly opposed this and insisted that these rights must remain written into the constitution.
The performance is based on archival material, written records from the period, and conversations with participants in this struggle. It sheds light on a story of connection, solidarity, and alliances that ensured the right to choice in Slovenia is today constitutionally protected.
