1974

We would like to thank Neda R. Bric, Daša Doberšek, Linn Julian Koletnik, Jan Krmelj, Voranc Mandić, and Draga Potočnjak.

In 1974, Marko Brecelj released the iconic Cocktail, Yugoslavia defeated Zaire 9–0 in football (almost causing a diplomatic scandal), Japanese sergeant Hiroo Onoda learned on a Philippine island after thirty years in hiding that World War II had ended, Muhammad Ali defeated Foreman and regained the world boxing title, ABBA won the Eurovision Song Contest, the Turkish army occupied more than a third of Cyprus and established a division that still exists today, an express train derailed on its way from Belgrade to Zagreb, killing 153 people, and the Carnation Revolution ended the fascist dictatorship in Portugal…

The performance 1974 is a transgenerational documentary fiction based on the personal stories of its creators. Narratives from the 1970s grow out of then-existing homes and connect with numerous local and global events. The performance outlines a network of life trajectories stretching across time, shaped by travel and migration. Above all, it is about theatre itself.
