“This is it,” is the opening line by the striking Jordan Tannahill in his play Declarations, written almost in one go on an airplane in 2018. The enfant terrible of Canadian theatre is presented to Slovenian audiences for the first time in Maja Delak’s staging. His Slovenian debut is marked by his most emotionally charged text, in an open format that continuously demands the creation of new associative fields for both performers and audiences.
The performance is conceived as a movement composition, an embodiment of a space of mourning, inhabited—through movement and word—by five performers. Their bodies become vessels of memory and grief. Every gesture, every spoken word acts as an intrusion into the inevitability of both personal and universal loss. The staging does not seek solutions or fixed choreographic structures, but remains within a space of absence, and thus openness, reaching toward what has already disappeared. Words interrupt movement, and movement interrupts words—like an echo in an empty room, like the resonance of the unspoken.
