Iskanje in definiranje lepote
“Art is the search for and definition of beauty. This is the essence of our being and existence.”
Tomaž Pandur
The exhibition Searching for and Defining Beauty, featuring theatre photography and other archival material, presents six productions by Tomaž Pandur from the period of his artistic leadership at the Drama of the SNG Maribor (1989–1996). A central place in the exhibition is given to the black-and-white photographs by photographer Angelo Božec, which stand as a compelling document of Pandur’s creative vision, his immense passion for creating new worlds, and his unique poetics—faithful to the very end of his artistic journey.
Even as a young director, Tomaž Pandur demonstrated a masterful command of the powerful visual symbolic language through which he transformed classical texts into bold and suggestive stage worlds with innovative scenography, irresistibly attractive to audiences worldwide. The productions he staged during his seven years at the Maribor Drama pushed the boundaries of theatrical art, provoking fascination as well as controversy. The performances Faust, Hamlet, Carmen, La divina commedia (Inferno, Purgatorio and Paradiso), Russian Mission, and Babylon undeniably marked both Maribor and Slovenian theatre, placing it firmly on the global theatre map.
