On stage, kings, lovers, and heroes die, while the audience observes this fiction from a safe distance. But what happens when death truly enters a theatre ensemble? When, after the death of an actress, a void remains for the actors—a void filled with grief? How can this be staged in the theatre?

In her book, based on her doctoral dissertation, the author draws on five case studies of contemporary performances. Mourning, along with its related concepts of remembrance and farewell, appears in them as a response to loss and shapes both the focus and the mode of theatrical performance.

The book Theatre and Mourning is dedicated to the memory of actors Gašper Tič and Jernej Šugman, who both passed away far too soon in 2017, leaving a significant human and repertory void at Mestno gledališče ljubljansko and SNG Drama Ljubljana.
