In excellent order
Project In excellent order Mateja Bučar is designed for the spacious volume of the Cukrarna lobby, where the author forms a line or "excellent order" of dancing bodies of important creators of different generations in the field of contemporary dance. However, the title, together with the arrangement of important dance authors in a line, in a series of recognizable individual dance expressions, techniques and aesthetics, with an emphasis on excellence, encourages us to consider whether such an act also reaches the field of cultural policy and is at the same time a commentary on the position of contemporary dance art in Slovenia. The exploration of the embodiment of the line is repeated and upgraded in Mateja Bučar's oeuvre.
This time, the line contracts, stretches, bends, twists and unfurls, coming to life as an incomplete temporary dictionary of Slovenian contemporary dance, which combines a whole range of different movements in a unique and playful way. When drawing a line into space, the question arises whether it is an attempt to delimit space into individual segments, fields or sides, to decompose or reconstruct it, to explore and shape intermediate spaces, to freely travel a moving line of bodies through an architectural landscape, or perhaps something else entirely. Despite the dominant rigor that is heralded by the “exquisite order”, it seems that the continuous and dynamic line that Mateja Bučar and her co-creators draw together – a complex and simple, constantly moving choreographic composition at the same time – paradoxically also brings a sense of freedom and fluidity, where the strict structure opens up space for spontaneity, individuality and playfulness in movement.
