Commented concert
Grega Gorensek is a top percussion soloist who graduated from the Academy of Music in Ljubljana in classical percussion. During his studies, he received a Zois and Yamaha scholarship, and at the national competition of young Slovenian musicians (TEMSIG) he won first prize and a gold plaque in the highest category.
He has been teaching at the Conservatory of Music in Maribor for over twenty years and is the author of the first Slovenian books on percussion technique. He has written five textbooks, based on which he conducts presentations and seminars at music schools. He has participated in numerous recordings and performances and is the first Slovenian percussionist to record and release studio solo albums and videos, and we also know him from his appearance in the second season of the show Slovenija ima talent. In addition, he is a top rock drummer and a chamber and orchestral musician.
A metallophone is a melodic percussion instrument consisting of tuned metal plates that are struck with sticks. It is part of the family of idiophones (self-sounding musical instruments), where the sound is produced by the substance itself. The plates are usually made of aluminum or special metal alloys, which gives the instrument a rich, soft and long-lasting sound. The main difference between a metallophone and a xylophone is the material of the plates: a xylophone has wooden plates, while a metallophone has metal plates, which gives the latter a longer resonance. There are soprano, alto and bass metallophones, which differ in size and tonal range. They are also divided into two types: diatonic ones are tuned to a specific scale (e.g. C major), and chromatic ones include all semitones. The metallophone is often used in schools as part of the Orff instrument for learning music, and of course also in orchestras. And just such a large metallophone will sound at our concert.
