The English Chamber Orchestra is one of England’s most distinguished ensembles and always a welcome guest in Maribor. This time, together with the outstanding Polish conductor Marzena Diakun, the orchestra will dedicate itself to works by Viennese composers or composers active in Vienna during the celebrations of Mozart’s birthday.
The energetic yet precise performance of the young conductor will be complemented by the distinctive personal style of the charismatic Elisabeth Leonskaja. The Russian pianist, born in Tbilisi, Georgia, has been captivating audiences around the world for more than six decades with her heartfelt musical expression. “As performers, we must allow musical expression to resonate. We should not be afraid to express emotions through music,” says Leonskaja — something she proves with her dedication at every performance.
Her remarkable musical journey began while still a student at the Moscow Conservatory, where she started winning awards at major international piano competitions and attracting the attention of the greatest musicians of her time. She impressed the legendary Sviatoslav Richter, who profoundly influenced her artistic development and with whom she closely collaborated. In 1978, she left the former Soviet Union and settled in Vienna, from where she continues to develop her rich international career.
As a soloist, she performs with leading orchestras and renowned conductors and regularly appears at prestigious international festivals. Her name is also highly respected in the field of chamber music, making her a frequent guest in major piano series around the world — from Paris and Vienna to Melbourne. In 2020, she received the ICMA Lifetime Achievement Award. This concert marks Elisabeth Leonskaja’s first appearance on the stage of Maribor’s Union Hall.
