Jonáš Gruska: Artificial Ultrasonics Research

The opening solo exhibition by Jonáš Gruska: Artificial Ultrasonics Research

You are kindly invited to the opening of the solo exhibition by Slovak artist Jonáš Gruska titled Research on Artificial Ultrasound, taking place on Thursday, 4 June 2026 at 18:00 at the artKIT exhibition space.

The first part is an algorithmic composition of artificial echolocation calls—bat-like vocalisations—played through a specially constructed rotating speaker installation. The signals are frequency-shifted on site using portable heterodyne frequency shifters (ultrasonic detectors), bringing ultrasonic content into the audible range.

The installation functions as a variation of the Axis Mundi sound distribution system — a temporary sonic pillar connecting the celestial with the terrestrial, and the ultrasonic with the audible.

The second part is documentary in nature and addresses sound weapons, interference, and incidental emissions that saturate the acoustic landscape of Tokyo. The city is unusually densely filled with ultrasonic emitters designed to empty public space through sound.
