Meranovo (Winemaker)

Meranovo (Winemaker)

Among the green and rolling hills of vines, you’ll find an estate that tells tales of a time and place from long ago. Long ago, in 1822, Archduke John Habsburg–Lorraine, grandson of the enlightened Maria Theresa, stepped out of this house on a green hill. He took in a deep breath of the fresh Štajerska air and presented the finest Rhine varieties to the local population. And how well they took root in the soil here! The story of wine continues proudly today at the Meranovo estate, which is worked by students and professors of agriculture and biosystems from the University of Maribor. They’ve managed to bottle up the very essence of Štajerska.

Listen to stories about the beginnings of the winemaking tradition in the region and get a glimpse at its future through the lens of modern research. Today Meranovo is a center for enological study and research. It even houses a gene bank, replete with more than 400 different sorts of grapes. Take a lovely stroll around the hilly estate and taste the delicious sorts produced, which all have won prestigious awards.

Sauvignon and Riesling are king upon this 15-hectare estate. The lay of the vineyard, the terroir, the old secrets, and the modern approaches give Meranovo’s wines a truly unique character. It would be hard to imagine a better and more intimate experience than enjoying a glass of wine and plate of homemade specialties as green hills roll off into the distance, here in the very heart of Štajerska’s wine region.
