A 20 minute walk from the oldest vine in the world at the embankment of the Drava River, past the stadium and the city park, you will encounter the northwest city wine-growing outskirts, where you will find the first vineyard of the descendants of the oldest vintage vine in the world since 20 April 2016.
The then master of the vine and Mayor of Maribor, dr. Andrej Fištravec, drated a deed, including the city stamp from the Middle Ages, gifting the Biotechnical School of Maribor 500 grafts, the descendants of the more than 400 year-old Žametna črnina or Modra kavčina.
The location of the planting was not accidental. This is one of the oldest wine-growing locations. As a "hill above the city" (Wordenberch) the history sources first mentioned this location in the year 1337. The name today, was received in 1681, when the blessed small church of Saint Barbara was erected, standing for more than 300 years as an inseparable part of the city veduta. The wine-growing location belonged to the then Land Fruit and Wine School in Maribor in 1872, and in 1938 it was the location of the sunken fruit warehouse facility according to the plans of the fruit expert prof. Josip Priol. Since the beginning of the seventies of the 20th century it has been featuring an assortment of vines from the Štajerska Slovenia.
By planting the first and until then the only vineyard of the descendants of the oldest vine from the Maribor Lent, we attempted to invoke the memory of the historical tradition of viticulture education in Maribor, which will soon celebrate 150 years. The direct vicinity houses the school cellar and a wine shop with other produce as well, and there is a walking trail over Kalvarija from where you can view the unique merging of the Alpine and the Pannonian world.
