Discover the cultural sights, galleries and creative corners that reveal Maribor’s unique character.

Maribor delights visitors with its rich cultural heritage, vibrant cultural centres and contemporary art. Stroll among historic sights, visit galleries and museums, and discover creative quarters where history, architecture and contemporary creativity come together. Each visit reveals a new story of the city and its cultural life. Most of the route can be explored on foot.

Start in the city’s squares

On Glavni trg (Main square), see Rotovž (Town hall) and the plague column. Continue towards Slomškov trg (Slomšek square) and the cathedral, or towards Grajski trg (Castle square) and Trg svobode (Freedom square). The distances between the squares are short, allowing you to adapt the route to your available time and interests.

Mariborski grad (Maribor castle) stands beside Grajski trg (Castle square) and houses Pokrajinski muzej Maribor (Maribor regional museum). Its collections present the history, art and everyday life of Maribor and the wider region. Check the current opening hours and exhibition programme before visiting the interiors.

Kulturna četrt Židovska (Židovska cultural quarter)

Židovska ulica and Židovski trg (Jewish square) are an important part of the former medieval city centre. The main sight is Sinagoga Maribor (Maribor synagogue), one of Europe’s oldest surviving synagogues. Židovski stolp (Jewish tower) and gallery spaces are also nearby.

Kulturna četrt Židovska (Židovska cultural quarter) now hosts exhibitions, lectures and other cultural programmes. As the programme changes, check current events and the opening hours of individual venues before visiting.

Lent and heritage along the Drava river

On Lent, you can see Najstarejša trta (World’s oldest grapevine), Vodni stolp (Water tower) and Sodni stolp (Judgement tower). The area is linked to the history of the city walls, trade, timber rafting and life along the Drava river. Nearby is Muzej najstarejše trte na svetu (Museum of the World’s oldest grapevine), which explores the vine’s story and Maribor’s wine heritage in greater detail.

Kulturna četrt Minoriti (Minoriti cultural quarter)

Kulturna četrt Minoriti (Minoriti cultural quarter) occupies the former Minorite complex beside Vojašniški trg. It brings together Lutkovno gledališče Maribor (Maribor puppet theatre), Lutkovni muzej Maribor (Maribor puppetry museum) and venues for theatre, film, music and other events. The programme is especially appealing to families, but also includes events for adult audiences.

Museums, galleries and cultural institutions

Choose one or more museums and galleries to discover the city in greater depth. Pokrajinski muzej Maribor (Maribor regional museum) presents the region’s cultural heritage, while Umetnostna galerija Maribor (Maribor art gallery) explores modern and contemporary art. Muzej narodne osvoboditve Maribor (National liberation museum Maribor), smaller galleries and independent cultural spaces offer further experiences.

For an evening programme, check the schedules of Slovensko narodno gledališče Maribor (Slovene national theatre Maribor), Narodni dom Maribor, Lutkovno gledališče Maribor (Maribor puppet theatre) and other venues. Concerts, theatre performances, exhibitions and festivals take place in the city throughout the year.
