Welcome to Trafika – Muzej za enega (Museum for one), a tiny building beside Glavni most (Main bridge) that has witnessed life along the Drava for over a century.

Did you know that Maribor is home to one of Slovenia’s smallest museums? In just 7.5 square metres, the city’s history, residents’ memories, fascinating anecdotes and even love stories come together.

From kiosk to museum

The kiosk on Trg revolucije (Revolution square) was built in the 1920s. People once came here for newspapers, cigarettes, stamps and other small items, but often also stopped for a conversation. Kiosks were more than shops: they were important meeting places where news, rumours and city stories were exchanged.

Over time, the building became a recognisable part of Maribor. Slovenian writer Drago Jančar also wrote about it in his novel Severni sij (Northern lights).

When the kiosk faced being sold, local residents and lovers of the city’s heritage stepped in. Following renovation, it opened in 2019 as Trafika – Muzej za enega (Museum for one), operating under Muzej narodne osvoboditve Maribor (National liberation museum Maribor).

A Turk who has watched over Maribor for a century

If you stop outside the kiosk, look above the entrance. On the façade, you will see an image of a Turk who has watched the city’s events for around a century.

During that time, countries, political systems and generations of Maribor residents have changed, as have traffic and the city’s appearance, while the little kiosk has remained in place.

This painting is one of the building’s distinctive features and a fascinating reminder of the city’s past.

A museum where you can discover the personal stories of Maribor residents

Although it measures just 7.5 square metres, Trafika offers much more than a look at an old kiosk. Inside are objects once sold in kiosks, old newspapers, postcards, stamps and other small items from everyday life.

The museum also preserves residents’ stories and holds small themed exhibitions. Visitors can browse historical material, discuss the city’s past or visit the tiny reading room and library, which operates on a book exchange basis.

Does visiting the kiosk really bring luck in love?

Trafika is also associated with an unusual local superstition. It is said that visiting this tiny museum brings luck in love.

The kiosk is believed to have been the setting for many encounters and love stories. You can decide for yourself whether the legend is true, but it certainly adds a romantic touch to a visit.

A small stop, a great discovery

Trafika – Muzej za enega (Museum for one) stands on Trg revolucije (Revolution square), beside Glavni most (Main bridge), so it is easy to include in a walk around Maribor.

On your next visit to the city, stop outside the little white building, admire its unusual painting and take a peek inside. You might discover a story you did not know, or perhaps your visit really will bring a little luck in love.
