Maribor for culture surfers brings together contemporary art, murals, bold architecture and creative spaces. Discover Petra Varl’s Kiss, look beyond the façade of the Hutter Block and meet emerging artists on Židovski trg. Pause for coffee between galleries, then extend your walk to spaces where art meets technology.
You don’t need the same tastes to explore a city
Some people are drawn to a drawing on a wall, others to an unusual concrete building, and others to an exhibition by an artist they have never heard of. Maribor for culture surfers is a walk for anyone who enjoys exploring with their eyes, wandering off the main route and letting a city surprise them.
Its stops connect museums and creative spaces with street art and 20th-century architecture. Along the way, there is plenty of room for a bite to eat and a coffee. Choose what catches your eye, linger over a particular work and allow yourself to ask: why is this here?
Before you swipe on, pause in front of a work of art
Start at the Maribor Art Gallery on Strossmayerjeva ulica. Here is an interesting fact for anyone who also associates art with moving images: since 1999, UGM has held Slovenia’s first video art collection. For decades, its collecting has reached beyond painting and sculpture to embrace a medium that now shapes much of our everyday lives.
Try something simple during your visit: choose a work that stops you before you read its description. What drew you in? The colour, an unusual image, a sense of unease? Then explore the artist’s story. You don’t need prior knowledge to enjoy a gallery visit, just a little time and curiosity.
If you are interested in newer approaches, also check the programme at UGM Studio on Trg Leona Štuklja. Its exhibitions feature younger artists and fields such as design, architecture, illustration and urban art.
A kiss connecting Maribor and Metelkova
Petra Varl’s wall drawing Poljub (Kiss), beside the car park near the Faculty of Law, has a backstory in another city. In 1994, the artist created Nos ob nos (Nose to Nose) in the car park at Ljubljana’s Metelkova. When she turned to the Maribor wall in 2012, she continued the motif with a “mouth-to-mouth” kiss as part of the Maribor <edu> Graz project.
This simple drawing connects two urban spaces and two periods of the artist’s work. Its position on a wall beside a car park means you can encounter it while running an everyday errand. Here, art becomes part of daily life, without gallery doors or a planned visit.
Take a moment to look at its surroundings too. How does the large drawing change the wall? How does it work among cars and passers-by? A photograph captures the motif, but the space around it reveals the full experience.
Concrete with a vision of a better life
The Hutter Block is a worthwhile stop for anyone who enjoys photographing architecture. But its story becomes even more interesting when you discover what was planned for its residents. Built between 1940 and 1941 to designs by Aleksander Saša Dev and Jaroslav Černigoj, the block had passenger lifts, central heating, fitted wardrobes, bathrooms with bathtubs and electric cookers. There was also a shared mechanical laundry in the courtyard.
For its time, this was a thoughtfully designed, modern living environment. The building was intended for townspeople, specifically senior office staff employed at Hutter’s factory. As you look at it from the street, consider a question that remains relevant today: what does a city need to offer people for them to live well?
Jemčev vrt, a Brutalist building by architect Borut Pečenko, reveals a different architectural character. On its western façade, look for Boljka’s sculpture Atomska doba (Atomic Age), which resembles a molecule. Here, it is worth looking above the shop windows: the artwork is part of the building itself.
Meet the artists before you know their names
On Židovski trg, visit Media Nox Gallery, which presents promising young artists from Slovenia and abroad. It is a chance to encounter fresh artistic perspectives that you may not yet have seen in larger exhibition venues.
Art continues outside the entrance too. In 2024, MKC Maribor established Mlade arkade in the outdoor arcades, an exhibition space for artists up to the age of 29. The gallery thus extended onto the square and became part of the route taken by passers-by.
If a particular work catches your eye, take a look at the Media Nox online shop too. It offers prints and reproductions of work by young artists. Your souvenir of Maribor could be a piece of art whose purchase supports the city’s emerging creative scene.
Venture a little further: where art meets technology
To extend your walk, check KIBLA’s programme. Maribor’s multimedia centre began operating in 1996, bringing together art, technology, research and education. It is an interesting direction for visitors drawn to new media and the crossing of boundaries between creative disciplines.
KIBLA PORTAL at Valvasorjeva ulica 40 has a story of its own. The exhibition venue occupies the former MTT textile factory and opened in 2012, when Maribor was the European Capital of Culture. The industrial space found a new role through contemporary artistic practices, from computer and intermedia art to painting and sculpture.
PORTAL lies outside the city centre, so include it as an additional stop depending on the current exhibition. Before visiting, check the programme and opening hours of your chosen venue.
Create your own cultural wave
For a relaxed visit, choose one exhibition, one architectural story and one outdoor artwork. Take a break for coffee or lunch along the way. That leaves time for an unexpected discovery too.
If you would like to continue into the evening, check the programme at the Intimate Stage in GT22. A former nightclub has become a theatre for around 50 spectators, dedicated to experimental productions and guest performances. Visits are tied to events or made by arrangement, so choose your date in advance.
Explore Maribor for culture surfers at your own pace. Stop at a work that draws you in. Take another look at a building you don’t immediately understand. The most interesting part of your walk may be the one you never planned.
