Discover Maribor from different angles in one day. Explore the squares and Lent, then visit a museum or Vinag Wine Cellar. After lunch, walk through the City Park to Piramida, once home to the castle that gave the city its name. Enjoy dinner and a stroll along the Drava, with time for a final coffee the next morning.
Morning: get to know the city on foot
Start with breakfast and a walk from Grajski trg to Slomškov trg and Glavni trg. Stop outside the castle, take a look at the cathedral and enjoy a coffee on Poštna ulica. Then continue towards Židovski trg and head down to Lent.
Visit the Oldest Vine beside the Drava. Let this stop introduce you to the city’s wine heritage, which you can explore further underground or among the vineyards later in the day. Leave enough time during this first part of your visit to sit by the river, too.
Midday: another city beneath the square
On Trg svobode, everyday life unfolds above an underground world of wine. Part of Vinag Wine Cellar lies beneath the square, with its oldest section dating back to 1847. The entire cellar covers around 2.1 kilometres of underground tunnels. Among the barrels and wine archive, the city centre takes on a whole new dimension. Check guided tour times and booking options before visiting.
If museum stories appeal to you more, spend this part of the day at the Maribor Regional Museum in the castle. Choose one longer indoor visit, then enjoy lunch. This will leave plenty of time for your afternoon outing.
Afternoon: the hill where Maribor’s story began
Walk through the City Park towards Piramida. The climb up the 386-metre hill leads through vineyards, with views of the city, Pohorje and the Drava Plain from the top. Allow around half an hour for the climb from the park, plus time to enjoy the view and return.
Piramida offers more than a beautiful view. In the 12th century, Marchburch Castle stood here, giving its name to the settlement below. The hilltop castle and the present-day castle in the city centre are therefore two different buildings. At the summit, you will find traces of the older castle and a chapel that commemorates it.
Looking down towards the city streets, you can pick out the places you visited in the morning. The view brings the individual stops together. If the climb does not suit you, spend the afternoon walking through the City Park instead.
Evening: make time for dinner and the Drava
Back in the centre, choose somewhere for dinner and ask about local dishes and Styrian wines. Continue the evening with a performance or concert if something in the current programme catches your eye.
For a quieter end to the day, return to Lent and stroll along the Drava. If you stay overnight, start the next morning with breakfast and a short walk to your favourite spot from the day before. Bring your visit to a close without rushing.
