Let children discover Maribor through play. At the Maribor Puppetry Museum (Lutkovni muzej Maribor), they can bring a puppet to life; at the Centre of Experiments, explore scientific phenomena; on a climbing wall and in an adventure park, test their skills; and at a workshop, create something of their own. Choose one main adventure, allow time for a snack and let children’s curiosity shape part of your day.
1. Bring a puppet to life in the attic
Look for the Tri babe house on Vojašniški trg. Its attic is home to the Maribor Puppetry Museum (Lutkovni muzej Maribor), which presents half a century of the city puppet theatre’s professional work. A visit goes beyond looking at display cases: an interactive stage invites visitors to try animating puppets themselves.
How can an object look around, turn or show surprise convincingly? When children try moving a puppet, they discover how much imagination and skill are needed for a few seemingly simple movements.
Part of the exhibition comes to life in another way, too. Using a tablet, the LutkAR app employs augmented reality to make puppets move, teach and entertain before visitors’ eyes. Older productions thus find a new way to reach today’s children.
2. See what happens in an experiment
At the Centre of Experiments Maribor, you discover natural phenomena by trying interactive experiments. Children can first make a guess, then test it and explain what they observe in their own way.
Let them choose the first experiment. Instead of rushing to the right answer, ask what they think will happen. Adults can join in too: everyone predicts the result, then you test it together.
3. Head into the treetops
If your children mainly need movement and adventure, look into Betnava Adventure Park (Pustolovski park Betnava) and Vurberk Adventure Park, both included in Visit Maribor’s family offering.
Before visiting, check age and height restrictions and supervision requirements. For a first visit, choose a course that allows children to build confidence gradually. Even overcoming a small obstacle can be a big achievement.
4. Find your own route up the climbing wall
Klajmber Bouldering Centre offers another option for an active family outing in Maribor. Before visiting, check the conditions for children and introductory options.
You can turn climbing into a problem-solving challenge: which hold should you choose and where should you put your foot? Allow children time to try again and adapt the difficulty to their abilities.
5. Create something with your own hands
A family pottery workshop offers a different way to round off your outing. Before focusing on the finished object, you get to know the material and the process, then shape your own idea. Visit Maribor features these workshops among its family activities.
When booking, check the suitable age range, duration and how to collect your creations after drying and firing.
Choose one or two activities for a single day. Give children enough time to repeat an experiment or linger with their favourite puppet.
