Maribor is a city of theatre, shaped by artists whose work reaches audiences worldwide. Edward Clug and Valentina Turcu are among the faces of its stage identity. Discover Radio and Juliet, the ballet where Shakespeare meets Radiohead, then combine your visit with a current production, puppetry or a theatre festival.
A love story with a different sound
What happens when Shakespeare’s Juliet enters the world of Radiohead’s music? Edward Clug explored the answer in the ballet Radio and Juliet, which premiered at SNG Maribor (Slovene national theatre Maribor) on 23 April 2005. He brought the familiar love story into dialogue with alternative rock and contemporary movement.
The production travelled from Maribor to stages around the world. On its twentieth anniversary, SNG reported 107 performances on tour. A work created on its home stage had become an international cultural connection.
Its story is a good reason to check what Maribor’s theatre is creating today before your visit. Performances of individual productions depend on the current repertoire.
Artists who return to the city for strength
In Visit Maribor’s feature, Edward Clug and Valentina Turcu tell the story of the city’s theatre scene. Their creative paths were also shaped by Tomaž Pandur, who entrusted them with their first choreographies more than three decades ago.
This is a way to discover Maribor through the people who help shape it. Before attending a performance, watch their video interviews in the Pripovedovalci Maribora (Maribor’s storytellers) series. They add a personal dimension to the experience on stage.
Let a stroll lead you to a performance
Start your visit at Slomškov trg (Slomšek square) and continue to SNG Maribor (Slovene national theatre Maribor). Choose a play, opera, ballet or concert to suit your taste. Set aside the evening for the performance and plan your sightseeing and dinner around its start time.
For a different stage experience, explore Lutkovno gledališče Maribor (Maribor puppet theatre). Check the subject matter and recommended age when choosing a performance, as puppetry appeals to different audiences.
When the city becomes a stage
The city’s theatre identity is enriched by the Borštnikovo srečanje (Maribor theatre festival) and Balet pod zvezdami (Ballet under the stars), which also brings the performing arts to a city square.
If you would like to include either event in your visit, choose your dates according to the current programme. You may come to Maribor for a single performance and stay for the city around it.
