Discover the Maribor of masters through art, architecture and details that change the way we see.

Discover Maribor, a city of masters, through the eyes of curator Jure Kirbiš. His account connects art with urban space, from Umetnostna galerija Maribor (Maribor Art Gallery) to Hutterjev blok (Hutter Apartment Block). The exhibition Spekter (Spectrum) shows how a familiar collection can take on new meaning through a different arrangement. Continue your visit through the streets and observe mastery in forms, materials and details.

Mastery is also in how something is presented

We usually first associate a work of art with its creator. Yet the space also affects how we see it: the colour of the wall, the proximity of another painting and the way we move through an exhibition.

For the exhibition Spekter. 70 let Zbirke UGM (Spectrum: 70 Years of the UGM Collection), UGM entrusted the exhibition design to designer David Tavčar. He connected more than 250 artworks through colour, form, material and texture. This gave the collection a perspective that did not follow only the dates when works were created.

This story suggests a simple way to visit a gallery: alongside individual works, observe their neighbours. Why are two artworks together? What do you notice between them?

Maribor through the eyes of Jure Kirbiš

As part of Pripovedovalci Maribora (Maribor Storytellers), curator Jure Kirbiš presents the city of masters. While studying in England, he wanted to become a cultural worker in Slovenia; his account directs visitors towards UGM and the city’s architecture.

Watch his video as an introduction to exploring. You will discover the city through the eyes of someone who selects art, interprets it and places it in a wider context.

Step out of the gallery and among the buildings

Hutterjev blok (Hutter Apartment Block) is among the stops in Kirbiš’s account. When looking at it, take time to consider the whole: proportions, repeated windows and the building’s relationship with the street. Architecture becomes more interesting when you ask how it was conceived for the people who lived there.

Continue your walk with a task of your own: find three details you would not notice on an ordinary walk through the city.

The heritage of masters extends to everyday objects

At Pokrajinski muzej Maribor (Maribor Regional Museum), the exhibition Prostori lepega (Spaces of Beauty) presents furniture and the craft techniques used to decorate it. A chair, wardrobe or piece of marquetry can also tell a story about knowledge, the client and the time it was made.

Explore the city of masters between gallery, museum and street. Check current exhibitions before visiting; individual displays change.
