At Meranovo, wine is accompanied by more than two centuries of history and a collection of over 400 grape varieties.

Meranovo above Limbuš is a distinctive stop on Podpohorska vinska turistična cesta (the Pohorje foothills wine route). Archduke Johann planted noble grape varieties here in 1822, and today the estate brings together winemaking and university research. A gene bank with more than 400 varieties shows that a vineyard also preserves knowledge.

An important chapter began in 1822

Archduke Johann planted noble grape varieties at Meranovo in 1822. The estate is associated with the development of modern Styrian winegrowing, and its story is also presented in the exhibition “Nadvojvoda Janez, oče Meranovega” (Archduke Johann, Father of Meranovo).

The historical account of the area also mentions 1832, when the first viticulture school in Styria was established on the estate.

This gives today’s visit a clear theme. Here, wine is also linked to efforts to improve cultivation and pass knowledge on to new generations.

More than 400 varieties means more than an ordinary wine selection

Today, Meranovo is home to a university agricultural centre of the Faculty of Agriculture and Life Sciences at the University of Maribor. The estate features a gene bank containing more than 400 different grape varieties.

This collection is not the same as the selection of wines available to taste. Its special value lies in the diversity of vines and its connection with research.

During a prearranged visit, ask how the collection is used and which topics are currently being researched. This can turn a tasting into an encounter with knowledge that usually stays outside everyday conversations about wine.

One address, several ways to visit

Meranovo is at Vrhov dol 14a above Limbuš. It offers wine tastings, estate tours, an exhibition and home-style food.

Alongside wine, the official website lists apple and pumpkin products and other estate products. Before visiting, choose what interests you most and check the possibilities for your preferred date.

Explore the Pohorje foothills area in sections

Podpohorska vinska turistična cesta (the Pohorje foothills wine route) extends between Ruše and Zreče. Meranovo can be a destination in its own right or a starting point for exploring the nearby part of the area.

For a day trip from Maribor, combine it with one additional stop. This gives the history, tour and tasting enough time while keeping the itinerary manageable.
