Green Tips

Guidelines for Responsible Visitor Behaviour in Maribor

With the green Pohorje Hills, the Drava River and picturesque wine-growing hills, Maribor offers a unique blend of stories, natural heritage and rich traditions. It is a place where vibrant city life, wine culture and unspoilt nature come together.

To preserve Maribor as a green, boutique and authentic destination for future generations, we invite all visitors to act respectfully, sustainably and responsibly.

These guidelines apply to visitors, tourist guides and tour operators. They represent a shared commitment to maintaining quality of life, visitor experiences and the natural environment in Maribor.

Respect Cultural Heritage

  • Do not touch the World's Oldest Grapevine or climb on monuments.

  • Help preserve cultural heritage and leave no trace.

  • Maintain peace and show respect in churches.

  • Do not touch exhibits in museums and galleries.

  • Guide groups with consideration for local residents and other visitors.

  • Enjoy wine responsibly and support local winegrowers.

Act Responsibly in Nature

  • Stay on marked trails to avoid getting lost or disturbing wildlife. Most land is privately owned, but respectful access is permitted to everyone.

  • Consider your abilities and weather conditions when planning your route. Choose equipment appropriate for the difficulty of the trail.

  • Riding motorcycles and bicycles in natural areas is only permitted on roads and designated trails. Pedestrians have priority over cyclists, and cyclists have priority over motor vehicles.

  • Swimming in the Drava River is prohibited due to safety risks. Visit the Mariborski otok outdoor swimming pool instead.

  • Always keep dogs on a leash. They can run freely in designated dog parks. Always clean up after your dog.

  • In the area of the three hills (Piramida, Kalvarija and Mestni vrh), you may encounter snakes, which usually hide from people. All snake species are threatened and therefore protected. Stay on marked paths, do not disturb stones in dry-stone walls and do not allow dogs to sniff around unsupervised.

  • Remember that we share nature with wildlife. Observe and listen carefully to discover the animals around you. Do not approach wildlife; use binoculars instead. Never feed wild animals. Observe nesting boxes only from a distance.

  • Take everything you bring with you back home and separate your waste for recycling. This includes cigarette butts and chewing gum.

  • Open-fire picnics are only permitted in designated areas. Do not use fire pits during droughts or strong winds when the risk of wildfires is increased.

  • Instead of picking flowers as souvenirs, take photographs. If you spot an invasive plant species, report its location through the Invazivke platform.

  • Only pick mushrooms if you can identify them reliably. Each person may collect a maximum of 2 kg per day. The same limit applies to chestnuts and blueberries.

  • In case of an emergency, call 112.

Choose Sustainable Mobility

  • We encourage visitors to travel to and explore the destination using sustainable transport options.

  • Park in designated parking areas and explore the city and its surroundings sustainably.
