Behind Maribor’s Vietnamese flavours is a story of an encounter, shared dinners and a journey.

Ngon opened its doors in Maribor in February 2015, but its story began during student years in England. Shared dinners among an international group of friends, meeting Thu and a journey through Vietnam grew into a restaurant. Through stops like this, you can also explore Maribor as a city of world flavours.

It all began in a shared student house

In Ngon’s story, Gregor describes studying in England and living in a house with an international group of friends. His housemates included students from Slovenia, India, Romania and Vietnam, and shared dinners opened up different cuisines.

There he met Thu from Saigon. Later, they travelled around Vietnam for a month, exploring its flavours, from street food to coffee. The experience became the starting point for their decision to introduce Vietnamese cuisine to Slovenia.

From a journey to Glavni trg 17b

Ngon opened its doors in Maribor in February 2015. The restaurant at Glavni trg 17b presents dishes such as pho and Vietnamese rolls, as well as Vietnamese coffee.

This gives a visit an interesting background. When you order a dish, its story connects with a particular encounter and the journey of the people who brought it to the city. A familiar Maribor square becomes a meeting place for different culinary worlds.

Where to go if you want to explore further

Miyabi at Betnavska cesta 21 presents Japanese cuisine. For Middle Eastern dishes, one option is Mr. Falafel at Gosposka ulica 30, where the featured specialities include falafel, hummus and baba ghanoush.

For a single visit, choose one cuisine and get to know it in a little more depth. Ask about a signature dish, how it is served or a recommended combination. Also explain how much heat you enjoy.

Let the first bite be a little different

When trying a foreign cuisine, the most useful question is: what would you recommend to someone visiting for the first time? This makes it easier to choose a dish that represents the venue while also suiting your taste.

Next time, you can choose a different culinary direction. Maribor will have a new flavour for every visit.
