In Jarenina, among the Slovenske gorice hills, Dveri-Pax Winery continues a winemaking tradition linked to Austria's Admont Abbey. The estate's history dates to 1139, when the vineyards became part of the monastery's holdings. Today, almost nine centuries of wine heritage meet modern winemaking, with a wine shop and restaurant in a restored manor house more than 450 years old.
Grapes come from vineyard sites in Jarenina, near Maribor, Jeruzalem and Radgona. The selection includes Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Furmint and Pinot Noir, as well as traditional-method sparkling wines. Steep slopes and differing soils give the wines their individual character. Most grapes are harvested by hand, and the vineyards are managed without herbicides.
At the Jarenina manor wine shop, guided tastings feature four, five or seven wines. The estate's Dveri-Pax Restaurant pairs contemporary seasonal cooking and local ingredients with its own wines and has been awarded three Gault&Millau toques. A visit brings together monastic heritage, regional vineyards and fine dining.
