In Vodole above Malečnik, just outside Maribor, Hiša Joannes Protner is a family winery whose history dates back to 1812. Winemaker Boštjan Protner works with vineyards in Vodole, Šempetrska gorca and Celestrina. The terrace above the vines overlooks the Drava Valley and the Pohorje hills.
The estate is particularly known for its Riesling, offered in both young and aged styles. The selection also includes Pinot Noir, white and rosé wines, and sparkling wines. Part of the vineyard area has held organic certification since 2019, though this does not apply to every wine. The labels feature a statue of St John of Nepomuk from Šempetrska gorca, connecting the wines with the area's heritage.
A distinctive part of the visit is the wine cellar more than 200 years old. Its older section is now used for tastings and storing archive wines. Guided tastings with cold dishes made from local produce introduce the family's winemaking traditions. In warmer months, guests can sit on the vineyard terrace. The winery lies on the Maribor Wine Road, near other wine estates in Vodole.
