On Slovenska Street beside Castle Square, Astoria Café is one of Maribor's historic meeting places. Opened in 1929, it occupies a building that was once part of the castle stables. The café is closely associated with Ezl ek, the famous street corner where young people gathered in the 1950s and 1960s, giving the location a lasting place in the city's social history.
Reopened in 2023, Astoria continues the tradition of a classic city café. The menu includes cakes, pancakes, ice cream sundaes and other desserts, alongside focaccia and salads for a light meal. Coffee, lemonades and other drinks complete the selection. The outdoor terrace overlooking Castle Square connects the café with the daily life of Maribor's old town.
Astoria also has a long connection with the city's cultural and social life. Music and gatherings have played a part in its history, while events continue to bring activity to the café and square. Its historic setting remains part of the experience of spending time in central Maribor.
