The Museum of the World’s Oldest Grapevine on Maribor’s Lent riverfront tells the story of a Žametovka vine more than 450 years old that still bears grapes. The museum occupies a restored 17th-century house on Vojašniška Street, close to the famous vine. Its exhibition looks beyond the Guinness World Record to explore the people who cared for the vine and Maribor’s development as a winegrowing centre in Štajerska.
Historical objects, documents and computer animation show how the vine became part of the city’s identity. The exhibition also traces changes to the Lent neighbourhood over the centuries and the winegrowing skills passed down through generations. The building retains its original cellar and wooden floor, connecting the exhibits with the history of the site.
A visit includes an animated film and a tasting of the Wine Queen’s selected wine or fruit juice. The museum provides a deeper understanding of Maribor’s wine heritage, with the living grapevine itself only a short walk away beside the Drava River.
