Maribor Castle stands in the heart of the city, between Castle Square, Freedom Square and General Maister Square. Its history dates to 1478, when construction began on the orders of Emperor Frederick III as part of the city's defences. Over the following centuries, noble families, particularly the Counts of Khisl and Brandis, transformed it into an elegant residence. Today, the castle houses the Maribor Regional Museum.
One of its highlights is the Knights' Hall, with elaborate stucco decoration and a ceiling painting depicting a cavalry battle. Another distinctive feature is the Rococo staircase, decorated with sixteen stone figures of boys symbolising different activities. The Loreto Chapel, built in 1655, preserves a statue of the Black Madonna and Child, while the castle cellar contains frescoes by Slovenian painter Matej Sternen.
The museum's collections explore the archaeological, historical and cultural heritage of Maribor and the surrounding region. Walking through the castle connects the lives of former noble families with the city's development and everyday life across the centuries. Its varied architectural styles also make it a distinctive part of Maribor's historic centre.
