The National Liberation Museum Maribor, housed in the former villa of local entrepreneur Scherbaum, explores the history of Maribor and north-eastern Slovenia in the 20th and 21st centuries. Its exhibitions examine everyday life, social change, wars and the events that shaped the city. Personal stories of local people offer an insight into how major historical events affected individual lives.
The museum's origins date to 1947, when a collection dedicated to the national liberation struggle was established at the Maribor Regional Museum. Today, its extensive collections include historical objects, documents and archival photographs, preserving valuable evidence of the city's development. Permanent and temporary exhibitions explore not only wartime history but also social life, culture and lesser-known stories of Maribor.
A distinctive part of the museum's work is making history accessible through objects and personal accounts. Thematic exhibitions, workshops and educational activities connect past events with human experiences. The museum is both a place of remembrance and a source of insight into the people and changes that have shaped modern Maribor.
