More than two kilometres of underground passages preserve Maribor’s winemaking heritage.

The Vinag Wine Cellar lies beneath central Maribor and is one of Europe’s largest and oldest traditional wine cellars. Its history began in 1847, when local nobleman Alojz Kriehuber laid the foundations for a winemaking enterprise closely linked to the city. After the Second World War, the cellar was connected to an older brewery cellar, creating a network of underground passages stretching for more than two kilometres.

Stone corridors, large wooden barrels and former concrete tanks offer a glimpse into Maribor’s winemaking past. A distinctive feature is the wine archive, which holds bottles from selected vintages. The cellars also recall an era when Vinag was a major wine producer and exporter in the former Yugoslavia.

Today, guided tours and tastings bring this history into focus. The experience explores the old storage spaces and the development of winemaking in Maribor, followed by an introduction to Vinag wines. Located at Freedom Square, the cellar reveals a less visible part of the city and its long winegrowing tradition.
