Twin towers, an ornate interior and a centuries-old pilgrimage tradition define this city landmark.

The Franciscan Church, or Basilica of Our Mother of Mercy, stands in central Maribor, near Maribor Castle. Its red-brick façade and twin towers make it a distinctive feature of the city skyline. Built between 1893 and 1900 to designs by Viennese architect Richard Jordan, the church combines Neo-Romanesque architecture with Gothic Revival details, reflecting the religious architecture of Central Europe at the turn of the 20th century.

A Capuchin church stood on this site in the 17th century. As the number of pilgrims increased, a larger sanctuary was built, receiving the title of minor basilica from Pope Pius X in 1906. The main altar houses the venerated image of Our Mother of Mercy, linked to a pilgrimage tradition in Maribor dating back to 1747.

Inside, ornate altars, wall paintings and stained glass reflect different periods of religious art. Highlights include an organ built by Maribor organ maker Josef Brandl in 1900 and paintings by Slovenian artist Stane Kregar. Adjoining the Franciscan monastery, the church remains an active place of worship and an important part of Maribor's architectural heritage.
