A historic town hall with an off-centre clock tower, Renaissance balcony and Baroque hall.

Maribor Town Hall (Rotovž) stands on the northern side of Main Square in the historic city centre. Originally built in 1515 in the Late Gothic style, it was remodelled by Italian craftsmen between 1563 and 1565. Its Renaissance façade features a stone entrance, pilasters and a balcony displaying the city coat of arms, flanked by two lions. Above the roof rises a Baroque clock tower, noticeably positioned away from the centre of the building.

A local legend offers an explanation for the unusual tower. According to the story, the builder deliberately placed it off-centre because he was unhappy with his payment. Behind the façade lies a Renaissance arcaded courtyard, while the former council chamber features elaborate Baroque stucco decoration dating from the 17th century.

For centuries, Rotovž served as the seat of municipal government, where important decisions about Maribor were made. Today, the historic building is also associated with wedding ceremonies and mayoral receptions. Alongside the Plague Column and surrounding townhouses, it helps define the character of Main Square.
