The former Attems residence features a frescoed Knights' Hall and centuries of regional history.

Slovenska Bistrica Castle stands on the western edge of the historic town centre, in the region between Pohorje and Haloze. Its origins date to the 13th century, although its present appearance reflects centuries of alterations. In 1717, Count Ignaz Maria Attems acquired the castle and transformed it into a Baroque residence. The complex includes an arcaded courtyard, a former defensive moat and castle gardens.

Its main artistic treasure is the Baroque frescoes by Franz Ignaz Flurer, painted between 1717 and 1721. The richly decorated Knights' Hall depicts the apotheosis of Hercules, with the coats of arms of the Attems and Herberstein families on its walls. Further frescoes decorate the grand staircase and castle chapel, where scenes dedicated to the Virgin Mary can be seen.

Today, the castle serves as a cultural and museum centre. Permanent and temporary exhibitions explore the history, art and heritage of the region between Pohorje and Haloze. Its historic rooms also provide a setting for concerts, theatre performances, weddings and cultural events.
