A former monastery and church on the Drava riverfront now host theatre and contemporary culture.

The Minorite Church and Monastery stand in Maribor's Lent district, between Vojašniški Square and the Drava River. The Church of the Assumption dates to the 12th century and was probably Maribor's first parish church. In the 13th century, the Minorite friars took over the church and developed the adjoining monastery. The complex is now Maribor's only surviving medieval monastery.

Over the centuries, the buildings underwent major changes. The church acquired its Baroque appearance, while the monastery was converted for military use after its closure in 1784. Restoration work uncovered medieval portals, frescoes and remains of earlier buildings. Beneath the church, a lower level with two Baroque crypts reveals different stages of its architectural history.

Today, the complex forms part of the Minoriti Cultural Quarter. Since 2010, the restored monastery has housed Maribor Puppet Theatre, with the former courtyard transformed into a performance hall. The renovated church hosts concerts, performances and cultural events, giving the historic buildings a new role in the city's cultural life.
