The Church of St Areh stands in a forest clearing beside Ruška Lodge, around 1,250 metres above sea level in the Pohorje hills. It is dedicated to St Henry II, the Holy Roman Emperor whose name gradually became Areh in local speech. The church's origins date to the 13th century, although it was first recorded in 1545. Originally Gothic, it underwent several alterations and acquired Baroque features.
Its most distinctive object is a medieval stone tomb slab brought from Žiče Charterhouse and associated with the veneration of St Henry. The interior also contains 18th-century Baroque furnishings, including works linked to sculptor Jožef Straub. A chapel stands nearby, with a spring below it that local tradition associates with healing properties.
The church is connected to the history of pilgrimage and mountain tourism in Pohorje. Nearby Ruška Lodge is one of the mountain range's oldest hiking lodges, surrounded by walking and cycling trails. Areh is also a winter skiing area, making the church part of a landscape shaped by both religious heritage and outdoor recreation.
