Rotovž Square (Rotovški trg) lies in Maribor’s old town, behind the Town Hall on Main Square. Once a trading area where farmers sold flour and hay, it was also home to the town’s stables. Known as Mehlplatz, or Flour Square, it was renamed Rathausplatz in 1876. A vaulted passage through the Renaissance Town Hall connects it to Main Square.
The Town Hall, originally built in 1515, has Renaissance arcades facing the courtyard. The square also has a place in Maribor’s puppetry history. In 1968, Maribor Puppet Theatre opened a venue here and continued performing on the square until its move to the Minoriti complex in 2010. This history adds a theatrical chapter to the area’s former commercial and civic role.
The area is now being transformed through the Center Rotovž project, planned to bring together a new central library, an art gallery and an art cinema. The redevelopment links historic buildings with spaces for culture and education, giving the former market square a new role in the city.
