General Maister Square (Trg generala Maistra) lies north of Maribor Castle, between Freedom Square and the City Park. Walking paths, mature trees and a fountain create a green space framed by historic buildings. The Neo-Renaissance First Grammar School, opened in 1873, is particularly prominent. The square has changed its name and appearance several times and received its present name in 1993.
Where the park meets the paved square stands the bronze monument to General Rudolf Maister, created by sculptor Vlasta Tihec Zorko in 1987. Maister and his forces played a major role in determining the northern border of present-day Slovenia in 1918. Beside the monument grows a lime tree planted when Slovenia declared independence in 1991. A bottle containing a document about the occasion was buried beneath it.
The square also contains a memorial to journalist Anton Tomšič and a fountain surviving from its post-war redesign. Maribor's municipal building and the castle stand nearby. The square offers a green connection between the historic centre and City Park, while recalling key events in the city's history.
