The Church of St Rupert stands in Spodnja Voličina, in the Slovenske gorice hills, where the old village centre developed around it. The church was mentioned in written records in 1352, while local tradition speaks of a chapel on the site as early as the 11th century. The present Late Gothic church was built between 1519 and 1538, with Baroque additions in later centuries. Its oldest surviving section is the 14th-century bell tower.
Inside, Gothic ribbed vaults and five richly decorated Baroque altars are among the main features. The altars are attributed to Maribor sculptor Jožef Holzinger and his workshop. During restoration in 2001, conservators uncovered earlier building layers and Late Gothic decorative paintings. A crypt beneath the main altar offers further evidence of the church's architectural history.
The church also reflects the region's history of Ottoman raids in the 16th century. Remains of former defensive walls can still be seen nearby. Today, it remains the centre of the local parish, with the annual St Rupert parish feast in September continuing a longstanding community tradition.
