Maribor Puppet Theatre is housed in the restored Minorite Monastery in the Lent district, beside the Drava River. The professional theatre began operating in 1974, building on a local puppetry tradition dating back to the interwar years. In 2010, it moved from Rotovž Square to the medieval monastery complex, where historic architecture provides a setting for contemporary performing arts.
The programme includes puppet performances for children, teenagers and adults, ranging from adaptations of familiar stories to original contemporary productions. The theatre performs in Slovenia and abroad and organises the Summer Puppet Pier international festival. Creative workshops and educational activities introduce audiences to different puppetry techniques.
The venue is also part of the experience. The main auditorium occupies the former monastery courtyard, with a stage connected to an outdoor performance area. The theatre helps shape the Minoriti Cultural Quarter, bringing together performances, concerts, exhibitions and other artistic events.
